Gah, so many thinky thoughts after this one. I've read many incarnations of the Bluebeard tale, and this one fits in gorgeously. But the ending is fabulous -- I love that John kills him quickly, and then runs rather than reporting his and Sherlock's crimes.

You definitely captured and augmented the mood of the original; brava.
