It comes up more than you'd think. It's very clear SIGN that Watson is very earnest in his feelings for Mary, and I just don't see her as the beard. More people than in more modern fandoms - and more than with Sarah in Sherlock - can countenance making both the Watson/Mary and Watson/Holmes relationships valid in their own ways.
