Very right. I know exactly what John means about making it real, and he must have been afraid Sherlock would simply deduce it and talk about it whether John did or not; he'd been avoiding Sherlock, no doubt (and why Mike ran out).
Sherlock is very believable here. Of course he thinks it's about him; he thinks everything is about him! But he does want to help, and he'll do his best now that John has told him how. It's a good thing that John told him, because otherwise he'd have no clue.
